ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING ON MONUMENTAL STATUES USING ACOUSTIC EMISSION -
FONTANA DI TREVI

SUMMARY

  • Day & night monitoring by acoustic emission on two statues (right horse and Triton) of the monumental complex of Fontana di Trevi, carried out in different weather conditions (January 1990: winter; July 1990: summer).
  • RESULTS

  • Although the temperature gradients on the observed regions exceeded 50C, the acoustic emission did not reveal particular situations of criticality for the statues neither in cold nor in hot weather conditions.
  • AE activity was mainly due to the athmospheric degradation and to the natural stress redistribution through the marble.
